Christina and Matthew

Christina:  Born and raised in coastal Connecticut, but for the past decade, I have been living the nomadic life with my husband and four kids, going wherever the Army sends us!

I was raised in a very faithful Protestant (Assemblies of God) household and love for God was instilled in me in a very young age. When I went away to college, I knew that I needed to find a new church home. Whether to continue attending church was never a question in my mind. But what I didn’t expect was that I would find a new home In the Catholic Church. I never even knew any good Catholics before college!

As soon as I was introduced to the Catholic faith, I was finding that many important gaps in history and theology were filled-in. The Scriptures that I had known and loved took on a whole new life! On April 10th 2004, I took the bold step of being the first person in my family (that I know of) to become Catholic.

Just over a year later, I met Matthew in front of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. I was working for a summer as an intern at the U.S. Embassy and we were introduced by a mutual friend. Matthew and my friend were among a group of West Point cadets assigned in Germany in a cadet leadership program. When I met up with them to guide them around Paris, my friend introduced me to Matthew and the rest of the group, Mark, John, and... Brandon. I awkwardly joked, “where’s Luke?” The rest, as they say, is history.

Matthew: I was born and raised Protestant (non-denominational) in Staten Island, NY. and left home on my 18th birthday for the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. In 2005, I met Christina in Paris France, of all places, and in year later, wed her for what began a most beautiful conversion to the fullness of truth.

My conversion did not always appear beautiful. At first, I was resolved to revert our family back to Protestantism. But the truth, goodness, and beauty in the faith drew me to its grandeur. I confirmed Catholic in 2014 and have since remained very active in catechetical instruction and adult formation.

In 2017, I earned a Masters of Military Arts and Science in Strategic Studies from the Army’s Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. My thesis work was on Just War Theory, which helped weave my faith into the tradition of my service obligations as a military officer.

Our four kids, Naomi, Evangeline, Gabriel, and Lucia, are the joy of our life and we look forward to where God leads us next during our time in the Army and afterwards.
